Atlantic Seaboard RV Vacation Itinerary

Mystic, Connecticut:  Did you know some of the best examples of America’s historic “tall ships” can be found in this beautiful seaside village? Your whole family will love taking a walk through sailing history! Your first stop on our suggested itinerary will net food, shopping and history enough for everyone in your group.

As you arrive in Boston, you’ll begin to notice the places where America’s early history evolved. Follow the Freedom Trail to find such iconic sites as the Paul Revere House, the Old North Church and Boston Common, America’s oldest city park. Save time for a visit to “Old Ironsides”, the USS Constitution launched in 1797. Everywhere you go, history unfolds as you explore this beautiful city.

On your second day in Boston, you’ll find plenty of entertainment options waiting. Whether it’s a night of baseball or a walking tour at Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox, don’t miss the chance to experience Boston’s legendary team. To feed your need for fine dining, exciting nightlife and world-class shopping, head for historic Faneuil Hall on the waterfront.

Once you’ve made your way into the scenic wonder that is New Hampshire’s White Mountain Range, you’re going to find something to suit every kind of explorer. Hike a rugged trail in places like Franconia Notch State Park and along the Kancamagus Highway. Drive the Mt Washington Auto Road for views you’ll never forget. Or dive into a day of shopping at New Hampshire’s famous outlet malls, as well as an amazing selection of boutiques and shops in little towns scattered throughout the White Mountains. Excellent RV camping is abundant in this area, with lakeside and mountain-view campgrounds to be found in towns like Campton, Meredith and Lancaster.

Adirondack Park, New York:  Who knew that a publicly protected area the size of Yellowstone was tucked into the mountains of New York? With six million acres of villages, hamlets and forest preserves, this Park contains the entire Adirondack Mountain range! RV parks abound, and the area’s three thousand lakes, hundreds of trails and rich cultural heritage make it the perfect spot for a stop along your way.

Located in New York’s Finger Lakes Region, Elmira is perfectly located for recreation of all sorts. Visit the National Soaring Museum, take the kids to vintage Harris Hill Amusement Park or spend a day immersed in NASCAR or SCCA racing just down the road at Watkins Glen International. The campground at Newtown Battlefield State Park is just minutes away from downtown Elmira.

The site of the most famous battle of the Civil War is not to be missed.  There is so much history to explore here.  Consider staying at the Gettysburg Campground for the night.

Whether you’ve visited our nation’s capital many times or are making your first trip here, no city in America offers the chance to experience history than Washington, DC. From the Smithsonian Museums to the breathtaking monuments on the National Mall, the things you’ll see here will stay with you for a lifetime. Campgrounds in the Virginia and Maryland towns surrounding DC are usually close to the area’s excellent Metro service or offer shuttles into Washington DC attractions.

With an extra day on your Washington DC visit, you’ll have time to get outdoors and find the city’s scenic treasures. Borrow a bike from the city’s Capital Bikeshare program and peddle the trails at Rock Creek Park. The National Arboretum is another favorite with visitors to the capital. Neighborhoods like Georgetown, Adams Morgan and Capitol Hill each have their own charm, so take the time to bike or walk the streets and get to know the secrets of each.

Nestled in the heart of Revolutionary War history, Williamsburg also offers some pretty exciting modern day attractions, too. From Busch Gardens to the Jamestown Settlement, a ghost walk through Colonial Williamsburg to a pirate ship excursion, the whole family will be glad you made a stop here. Area wineries and ale houses offer a delicious taste of the area, so take a break and sample what they have to offer. Several popular Virginia RV campgrounds can be found just off I-64, close to all area attractions.

A three-hundred year old city on the North Carolina coast, New Bern is ready and waiting to delight history buffs as the next stop on our Atlantic Seaboard RV Camping Itinerary. Be sure to visit Tryon Palace, once home to Royal Governor William Tryon, for a fascinating look into early American history. Visitors will also find the historic neighborhoods, nearby Civil War Battlefield Park and a walking tour of prominent African American city landmarks worth a look. Coastal North Carolina campgrounds are scenic and offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation close by.

Savannah, Georgia:  This exotic gem of Southern hospitality will make you wonder why you haven’t visited before. Take a walking tour past antebellum mansions, or travel to the heart of Okefenokee Swamp. Stroll the cool beauty of Savannah’s twenty-one historic squares, or tempt your taste buds with low country cuisine. Your whole family’s going to fall in love with Georgia’s first city!

St. Augustine has a long, rich history.  Founded in 1565 by Juan Ponce de Leon, the city has many historical attractions.  You'll want to visit the Castillo de San Marcos Fort built in 1672, the St. Augustine lighthouse, and the legendary Fountain of Youth, discovered in the 16th century.

If you're an art lover, you'll want to visit the Lightner Museum.  Originally built as a hotel in 1887, it was transformed into an art museum in 1946.
