Great experience with Road Bear. We had a new 23-25ft C model which had a slide out. Better than comparable RV from Cruise America. When calling with a minor issue they got it solved quickly over the phone. Great experience and adventure in Northern California and Southern Oregon.

Renting a RV with El Monte RV at Dublin, CA we had a great experience! Our RV was brand new and equipped with all features. The team had the RV and paper ready when we arrived so that we were good to go quickly - and that on a Sunday. That was a good start into our tour across California' s National Parks. The dropp-off was as uncomplicated as our pickup.

Tokyo is Japan’s electric capital city. It’s charged with tradition, culture, and a little bit of chaos. Likewise, there are so many other areas just outside of Tokyo that are equally captivating. If you’re touring Asia, you might as well visit as many places as you can.

One-Tank Trips

One-Tank Trips

Possible one tank-trips from Tokyo include many of the most popular sights to see around Japan. Within one to a few hours’ drive, one can leave Tokyo and see some of the more iconic Japanese landmarks. If you want to park your RV, Japan has an excellent public transport system, which is among the best in the world. This makes travelling in and out of Tokyo both easy and convenient. Even if you don’t have a lot of time, there are many areas within easy reach from the capital city.

If you’re looking for fun things to do outside Tokyo, here are some of the best day trips:

1. Kamakura

A trip to Kamakura is one of the most popular Tokyo day trips. This beautiful seaside Japanese city was once the medieval capital of the country. It’s notable for its Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, lush gardens, and bamboo forests.

The Great Buddha of Kamakura is among the most famous attractions. This large, 11-meter-tall bronze statue is a symbol of Japan.

Kamakura is approximately a one-hour train ride from Tokyo.

2. Odawara

Odawara is a scenic city in central Japan. Its main attraction is the reconstructed 15th-century Odawara Castle. This Japanese castle complex contains a museum that houses ancient armor and weaponry.

The Castle Ruins Park is a spacious and scenic area. It’s a lovely place to wander around and admire the magnificent Japanese landscaping. There are also many other museums in the city, including the Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Natural History and the Okada Museum of Art.

3. Enoshima

Enoshima is a picturesque island off the coast of Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture. It makes for a lovely day trip from Tokyo for travelers wishing to explore a coastal area of the country. It’s just a 90-minute train ride from Tokyo, or take your RV and see everything along the way. Our El Monte RV location in Tokyo can help you plan your route.

This island is known for the Enoshima Shrine, which is a site composed of three smaller shrines: Hetsumiya, Nakatsumiya, and Okutsumiya. They are found in three separate locations around the small island.

The Iwaya Caves feature Buddhist statues inside. There are also paths you can wander by candlelight. For a leisurely activity, the restorative Enospa Hot Springs are the perfect place to unwind and restore your energy on the island.

4. Lake Kawaguchiko

Lake Kawaguchiko is about a 2-hour train ride from Tokyo. It’s located near the majestic Mount Fuji. On a clear day, you’ll be able to admire an unobstructed view of the volcano – talk about a bucket list travel experience!

The lake itself is crystal clear and calm. Oishi Park is a beautiful urban area near the lake where lavender seasonally blooms. It’s one of the most popular places to take photos of Mount Fuji.

Besides exploring the area around the lake, there are a handful of other attractions close by.

Kawaguchiko Music Forest Museum contains a collection of antique music boxes. Live musical performances are also given regularly.

For travelers with a sweet tooth, stroll the narrow alleyway of Candy Alley (Kashiya Yokocho). You’ll find more than 20 shops filled with traditional Japanese sweets. Try red bean cakes, rice crackers, and deep-fried cookies. Then, wander over to Kurazukuri Street and see the old merchant homes and clay warehouses.

Kawagoe is one of the more unique cities near Tokyo and only about a 90-minute train ride away.

National Parks near Tokyo, Japan

National Parks near Tokyo, Japan

Nikko National Park: Two hours north of Tokyo is Nikko, a small town in Tochigi Prefecture that is best known for its national park. Nikko National Park is a popular hiking destination where you can see lakes, waterfalls and lush greenery on the plateau. It is particularly appealing during the summer, because the high elevation translates to cooler temperatures than in the city of Tokyo.

In addition to those natural attractions of Lake Chuzenji and Yudaki Falls, there are a number of historic architectural landmarks. Three of the most significant that you’ll definitely want to include in your itinerary are the Nikkotoshogu Shrine, the Futarasanjinja Shrine and Rinnoji Temple.

Visitors to Japan will find many other beautiful national parks. Not far from Tokyo lies Chichibu-Tama-Kai National Park full of forests, dramatic river valleys, massive waterfalls, and, its highest peak, Mt. Kita-okusenjo. This national park offers camping, fishing, river sports, hiking, and mountain climbing. This park is merely a stone’s throw from Tokyo, but it is a vast national park with plenty of room for camping, climbing mountain ranges and an idyllic place to get away from the city.

The seaside national park - Sanriku Fukko National Park will delight visitors with majestic beauty. Referred to by some as the "Alps of the Ocean", it boasts dynamic cliffs that provide a safe haven breeding grounds for various species of seabirds. This park is between Tokyo and Sapporo (north of Tokyo) and will take anywhere from 2-4 hours to get there. It is a testament to the resilience of the Japanese as it was created after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011 to help revitalize the region. It contains quaint fishing villages, unspoiled beaches and vast grasslands, as well as the coastal breeding grounds for seabirds. And it offers campgrounds with ocean views.

National Historic Sites near Tokyo, Japan

Japan has a rich and ancient history, so as you might expect, there are many historical sites in this beautiful country. Take a step back in time, roughly 5,000 years ago to visit the Sannai-Maruyama Ruins. They are the remains of a large village that lasted more than 1,500 years.  You'll also want to consider visiting the Sumiyoshi-taisha Shrine. The shrine, built in the 3rd century, is located in Sumiyoshi-ku, Osaka and is deeply cherished by the people of Osaka as the guardian deity for sailors and deity to bring prosperity. There are far too many historical sites to list here, so see Japan's National Tourism site for more information.
