Possible one tank-trips from Agoura Hills include many of the most popular sights to see around southern California.

East of Agoura Hills you could go to: Joshua Tree National Park, or Palm Springs, or Los Angeles, which is only 40 miles away, or less than an hour drive (depending on the traffic).

Southeast of Agoura Hills, you could visit: Anaheim, Disneyland, Orange County, Santa Monica, Venice Beach, the Santa Monica Pier, Laguna Beach, Newport Beach, Manhattan Beach, San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park, La Jolla, San Diego, and the Hotel Del Coronado.

Within only a 2-to-3-hour drive, you have access here to mountains, deserts, and beautiful coastline. Coastal California is quite amazing and full of lots of surprises for those who like to explore. Try a walk on Malibu Beach, go surfing at Huntington Beach or go shopping for antiques in the old mining town of Julian. You will not run out of things to do in this area.

The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation area is located in Calabasas, very close to Agoura Hills, only about 15 minutes east on US Hwy 101. Parts of this park include Cheeseboro Palo Comado Canyon, which are older than the steeper, more recently formed Santa Monica Mountains and provide popular terrain for hikers, bikers, and equestrians.

For over 150 years, ranchers made these canyons their home. Many of the native plants, poorly adapted to heavy grazing, were replaced with European annuals such as wild oats, mustard, and thistles. Despite numerous years of cattle grazing, we can still find a variety of native plant communities, including chaparral, coastal sage scrub, and riparian woodlands.

You can stroll to Sulphur Springs or hike to the top of Simi Peak to view the cities you’ve left behind. Enjoy a picnic under the canopy of an oak or take binoculars to go birding. Oak trees and sedimentary rock areas provide excellent nesting sites for owls, hawks, and other raptors. Keep an eye out for deer, bobcats, coyotes, and rabbits.

Depending upon the time of year that you visit Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks will help determine what activity you do. However, since each season is full of numerous possibilities, don’t limit your stay to just the summer months. 

Joshua Tree National Park, open all year long features the best wild flower viewing in the spring and summer. Joshua Tree National Park is about 130 miles south-east from Los Angeles— a two-hour 45-minute drive from there. And there’s a lot more to do in Joshua Tree National Park than just rock climbing. 

This park is remarkable. Think of Dr. Seuss books with spiky Joshua trees dotted among monstrous rocks that beg for more photos. You can drive through the park in less than an hour, but why not visit for the day or even overnight to enjoy camping, hiking, biking, or walking along the many trails. This desert landscape will amaze you; the views will thrill the photographer in you and the many activities will satisfy the adventurer in you.

For year-round fun, Angeles National Forest is only an hour from Los Angeles, a few hours north of San Diego, but offers an unlimited number of recreational activities. Try and include the Cleveland National Forest which is closer to San Diego, or the Sequoia National Forest in your itinerary as well.  

San Bernardino National Forest: This huge national forest offers 6 different recreation areas that all offer various campgrounds for your enjoyment. Trail rides on horses, driving off-highway vehicles, camping, fishing, snowshoeing and alpine skiing are all possible in this lovely national forest. Camping, swimming, boating, fishing, hiking and relaxing can be done in most of the 280 California State Parks, with all kinds of lakes, rivers and beaches for you to enjoy in this state’s varied countryside. California is very fortunate to have so many state parks for its residents and visitors to enjoy. The California state parks system is one of the biggest and most diverse state parks systems in the United States and the world.

Some of the most popular state parks near Agoura Hills include Malibu Creek State Park, Malibu Lagoon State Beach, Point Dume State Beach, the Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beach and Topanga State Park. Don’t forget to visit Santa Monica State Beach along the Pacific Coast Highway in Santa Monica. This beach is two miles long, has a picnic area, shops and a pier. And, they make volleyball, a running strip and basketball available for visitors. If you haven’t been already, take a walk on the Santa Monica Pier. This beachside boardwalk and carnival has been attracting visitors to the LA area for over a century.
