Indiana is home to three National Wildlife Refuges: Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge, Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge, and Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge and Management Area.
Indiana is also home to the 202,000-acre Hoosier National Forest.
The National Park Service manages 3 park properties in Indiana including the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore along the southern shore of Lake Michigan.
The State Department of Parks and Reservoirs manages 34 properties. There are an additional 14 state forests. 33 of the properties managed by the state allow RV camping.
In addition, three of America's Scenic Byways make their way through Indiana.
For auto racing fans, Indianapolis is home to the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400.

Major Attractions and Favorite Tourist Spots in Indiana
- Indiana Dunes National Park is one of the nicest waterfront parks you can visit. If you didn’t know it, you’d think you were looking at an ocean, but it sits on the shore of Lake Michigan.

This National Park is located in Northwestern Indiana, and managed by the National Park Service. It was authorized by Congress in 1966 as the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, the name by which it was known until it was designated the nation's 61st national park on February 15, 2019. The park runs for nearly 25 miles along the southern shore of Lake Michigan; it contains approximately 15,000 acres. Its visitors center is in Porter, Indiana.
Holiday World & Splashin' Safari is a combination theme park and water park located near Interstate 64 and U.S. 231 in Santa Claus, Indiana. The theme park is divided into four sections that celebrate Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July with rides, live entertainment, games, and attractions. Holiday World contains three wooden roller coasters.
The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is the world's largest children's museum. It is located at 3000 North Meridian Street in Indianapolis, in the United Northwest Area neighborhood of the city. The museum is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums. It has 472,900 square feet with five floors of exhibit halls and receives more than one million visitors annually.
The Indianapolis Zoo is a zoo located in White River State Park, in Indianapolis, housing more than 3,800 animals of more than 320 species and subspecies. The institution is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the American Alliance of Museums as a zoo, an aquarium, and as a botanical garden.
The Indianapolis Motor Speedway is an automobile racing circuit located in Speedway, Indiana. It is the home of the Indianapolis 500 and the Brickyard 400, and formerly the home of the United States Grand Prix. It is the largest sports venue in the world. It is located on the corner of 16th Street and Georgetown Road, approximately six miles west of Downtown Indianapolis. Constructed in 1909, it is the second purpose-built, banked oval racing circuit after Brooklands and the first to be called a 'speedway'. It is the third-oldest permanent automobile race track in the world, behind Brooklands and the Milwaukee Mile
.Historic Landmarks in Indiana
Indiana’s story stretches well into history, with significant events happening well before statehood was granted in 1816, and visitors can experience the people and places of the past firsthand at historic sites across the state. Here are just a few highlights:
- Angel Mounds State Historic Site, Evansville
- Levi & Catharine Coffin State Historic Site, Fountain City
- Falls of the Ohio State Park and Lewis & Clark Trail, Clarksville
- Whitewater Canal State Historic Site & Whitewater Valley Railroad, Metamora
- George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, Vincennes
The heritage at the Angel Mounds State Historic Site stretches back about 1,000 years. Around 1000 AD, a group of Native Americans began building a town along the Ohio River. The land was chosen because the river offered protection with the river on one side and a slough on the opposing side. The community built large platform mounds, defensive palisades, and numerous dwellings. Angel Mounds is a great example of the Mississippian Culture.
Levi and Catharine Coffin of Newport (now known as Fountain City) were two important abolitionist leaders that played a significant role in the Underground Railroad. As conductors, they helped more than 1,000 slaves reach freedom safely. You can now take a guided tour of the house that protected the freedom seekers!
During the summer of 1803, William Clark received a letter from Meriweather Lewis asking him come along on an expedition to the Louisiana Territory. Lewis and Clark met at Falls of the Ohio later that year to begin their incredible journey out west. Their meeting is honored at Falls of the Ohio State Park, which is also home to some of the oldest fossil beds in the entire world.
When the Whitewater Canal was built in the 1800s, the engineering miracle turned Indiana into the “Crossroads of America” by forming natural trade routes. After floods and droughts damaged the canal, the White Water Valley Railroad was built. You can experience the history of both in Metamora. Thirty-minute boat tours of the canal are offered on the Ben Franklin III. Pulled by two Belgian Draft horses, it is an experience like no other. Train rides on the Whitewater Valley Railroad are given from April through December.
Colonel George Rogers Clark and his army captured the British Fort Sackville in 1779 in one of the greatest feats of the Revolutionary War. Aided by French residents, the capture of Fort Sackville allowed the United States claim to the frontier. The George Rogers Clark National Historical Park is home to the largest national monument outside of Washington, D.C. Learn More.

Turkey Run State Park is famous for its canyons and natural trails. Voted number one by Hoosiers, visitors to Parke County have the chance to explore sandstone gorges and scenic views along Sugar Creek.
Nicknamed the “Little Smokies”, Brown County State Park is Indiana’s largest state park. It encompasses nearly 16,000-acres of rugged hills, ridges, and ravines. It’s considered a hot spot for leaf-peeping, mountain biking, and horseback riding in Indiana.
Indiana’s first state park, McCormick’s Creek State Park is over 100 years old and continues to draw visitors to Sweet Owen County! Enjoy swimming, hiking, waterfalls, horseback riding and much more!
