National Parks
First on our suggested itineraries is a trip through some of Texas’ many National Parks and Forests. History buffs will want to know the National Parks Service offers a glimpse into early Texas settlement through their sites commemorating the Missions of San Antonio. For a more recent look at history, be sure to visit the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park in Johnson City.
Big Bend National Park on the southern border allows visitors to explore mountains and desert in the same trip! Why not combine science and geography lessons in a way your kids will actually enjoy?
Alibates Flint Quarries in north Texas are a remarkable reminder of the ancient past. Learn how early Native Americans formed spear and arrow tips from the flint mined in the area by touring this protected quarry environment.
The hiking possibilities are endless in our state’s five National Forests! From Angelina National Forest in the heart of east Texas to the enormous Sam Houston National Forest north of Houston, Texas has worked hard to preserve the pristine beauty of its forestland. Texas State Parks
Did you know that in the Piney Woods section of Texasalone, there are fifteen State Parks and Historical Sites? That gives you an idea the care Texas takes to protect its natural and historic assets. For example, the bald cypress bayous of Caddo Lake State Park display a fascinating blend of ecosystems and wildlife.
Traveling northwest from Caddo Lake, you’ll find Lake Bob Sandlin State Park, rich in Native American history.
On the edge of Big Thicket National Preserve, you can explore Martin Dies, Jr. State Park, home to an amazing variety of birds and waterfowl, and even an alligator or two! VisitMission Tejas State Park near Crockett for sheer scenic beauty, and a look into earlyTexas history.
To see “The Grand Canyon of Texas”, travel south of Amarillo to Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Amazing red rock canyons provide hours of hiking and photography opportunities.

Major Attractions and Events
If you’re travelling in Texas in late September and early October, you simply must come to Dallas for the Texas State Fair! It’s no accident the Fair’s mascot is a five-story cowboy! Our State Fair is really that big, and it gets bigger every year. Home of the Cotton Bowl, the Fairgrounds in Dallas host a spectacular array of concerts, car shows, animal competitions, horse shows and carnival rides. Find a way to work the Fair into your Texas RV vacation; you’ll be glad you did!

While we’re discussing family fun ideas, be sure to visit the Schlitterbahn Waterpark Resort in New Braunfels. Actually two parks connected by a tramway, this family-friendly park has been voted the Best Waterpark in America several years in a row!
Don’t leave New Braunfels yet! Park that RV at one of several RV camps and take an inner tube float trip down the Guadalupe River. And one last great idea for your vacation—visit the New Braunfels Marketplace, an outlet shopper’s paradise complete with a hands-on museum for the kids!
If the kids need to get out and burn off some energy, take them to either of the Six Flags Theme Parks in Texas. Six Flags Fiesta in San Antonio and Six Flags over Texas in Arlington both have enough rides, food and exhibits to cure the worst case of “video-game-itis”!
For something a little more unusual, take the family to Wonder World Park in San Marcos, where you’ll tour a fault line cave and visit a wildlife petting zoo. And for something truly wild, take a trip north of San Antonio to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch for a Texas-style driving safari!
And now a little something for our diehard sports fans—a reminder that Texas is home to the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys! Still playing in Irving at Texas Stadium, the Cowboys are guaranteed to give RV campers great tailgating and football memories! When it comes to college football, where else would you want to be except Texas? The Baylor Bears in Waco, or the Aggies of Texas A & M in College Station. The North Texas Mean Green and the Texas Longhorns. Pick a team and become a fan, if you aren’t already. There’s real football being played in Texas, and you need to be part of some of the best tailgate parties on earth!
We can’t leave our Texas travelogue without tipping our hat to the center of NASCAR energy—Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth!
