National Parks

 

The amazing geological diversity of Utah will delight your family as you roll through our National Parks. One of the best examples is Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. With over a million acres, this Park boasts spectacular canyons and the beautiful blue waters of Lake Powell. Be sure to take your camera; even amateur photographers can’t help but take gorgeous shots of life in the wild!

While you’re at Glen Canyon, be sure to visit Rainbow Bridge National Monument, the largest natural arch in the world. An amazing example of the rock formations of the Colorado Plateau, it’s a great geology lesson for the kids!

Zion National Park in the southwest corner of the state is one of the most popular with campers. Awesome cliffs rise for a half-mile from canyon floor, giving fantastic views of the river below.

Bryce Canyon National Park is another of Utah's breathtaking natural wonders. It has been referred to as a cave without a ceiling and a forest of stone. Regardless what label is placed on it, Bryce Canyon is memorable site. 

If you find caves fascinating, pencil in some time for Timpanogos Cave National Monument. Your kids are going to love exploring the caverns, and the view from the cave trail will have your cameras clicking.

Railroad buffs will find their thrill at Golden Spike National Historic Monument in the northeast corner of the state. This site commemorates the completion of the nation’s first transcontinental railroad, complete with working steam engines and a film series detailing the history of the railroad.

And how do you suppose your kids will react when you tell them they’re camping in Goblin Valley? The unique rock formations will inspire lots of tales around the campfire, and off-road enthusiasts should be sure to take advantage of the trails.

On the Idaho border, anglers will find great fishing at Bear Lake State Park. Home to the annual Mountain Man Rendezvous, Bear Lake is the perfect place for pleasant RV camping. Here’s another idea for active families—Wasatch Mountain State Park in northeast Utah boasts outdoor activities galore! With numerous scenic RV campgrounds, make Wasatch your first stop for outdoor sports.

Amateur archaeologists should definitely visit Anasazi State Park Museum near Escalante. You’ll find more than one hundred excavated and preserved ancient pueblo dwellings and thousands of artifacts on display.

At the foot of the Wasatch Mountains near Heber City, park your motorhome at scenic Hailstone campground. You’ll find great opportunities for hiking, boating and fishing there, not to mention perfect vacation pictures.

Major Attractions and Events

 

What would your kids say to a half-million-gallon wave pool? That’s just what Seven Peaks Waterpark in Provo has to offer. Experience the one-hundred-foot freefall from one of their giant waterslides; it will really give your family something to talk about on the way home!

Another great waterpark to visit is Seven Peaks in Salt Lake City. The Waimea H20 watercoaster is a thrill a minute!

While you’re in Salt Lake City, stop by Hogle Zoo. Set at the mouth of Emigration Canyon, the Zoo features an amazing variety of birds, reptiles and mammals. Feel free to spend the whole day at the Zoo, because you’re going to come home to the comfort of a motorhome.

Sports fan should plan a fall trip to Utah just for the college football! The University of Utah Utes, 2008 Sugar Bowl Champions, play at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City. While you’re in tailgate party mode, stay to see the Brigham Young Cougars play at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo!

For a truly unusual tour, visit the Kennecott Utah Copper Mine. This enormous (three-quarters-of-a-mile deep!) mine has produced more than seventeen million tons of copper. Visitors are welcome to observe the mine from scenic overlook sites, and guided tours are available.

Just south of Moab in the Canyonlands, you’ll find the fantastic Hole’n the Rock House, a five thousand square foot home carved completely from the area’s native stone. The six-story chimney drilled through sandstone is truly astonishing, and the kids will enjoy the petting zoo and trading post on the grounds.

The wonders of Salt Lake City’s Temple Square draw millions of visitors every year, and can be a great day trip for RV campers. Although the Temple itself isn’t open for public tours, its incredible external architecture is a photographer’s dream. More than a dozen other historic buildings, parks and museums line Temple Square, and visitors are allowed to research their family lineage in the Family History Library. Watch the Tabernacle Choir rehearse, attend a free weekend concert in the Assembly Hall, and learn about the settling of the Utah Territory. Temple Square should definitely be on your travel agenda in Utah!

For more athletic pursuits, you’ll find that the San Juan River is perfect for rafting trips. From Level 1 day trips to Level 4 whitewater action, the San Juan is the premier Utah rafting location. Several rafting outfitters offer excursions, so make sure to book one for your own family.

No September trip to Salt Lake City should end without visiting the Utah State Fair. The signature fairway treat is a deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich! Fair food aficionados are going to love this celebration, and it’s also a chance to see Utah’s own PRCA rodeo.
