One-Tank Trips from New York and New Jersey
From New York or New Jersey, you can drive about an hour south to get to Philadelphia, continue south another hour to Wilmington and one more hour to take in the sights of the Inner Harbor in Baltimore. All these cities are easily accessible from I-95 and less than three hours’ total driving time from New York or New Jersey.
This is a great way to get a first-hand, up-close and personal American history lesson.
Philadelphia, PA
Some great sights to see in this city would include the park celebrating the birth of this country in Philadelphia. Visiting Independence National Historical Park is like taking a step back in American history where you can spend hours at this very historic park. Some notable sites to visit here include the Benjamin Franklin National Memorial, Declaration House, Independence Living History Center, Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site, the Liberty Bell Center and the Merchants’ Exchange Building.
Wilmington, DE
History was made in Wilmington as well as Philadelphia, as Delaware was actually the first state to ratify the Constitution. Delaware was born out of a conflict among three world powers for dominance of the Delaware Valley. From this beginning, the region developed a distinct character that tolerated diversity in religion and national origin and valued independence. First State National Historic Park consists of six sites spread throughout the state of Delaware that the entire family can enjoy.
Baltimore, MD
If you decide to continue to drive south to Baltimore, be sure to visit Fort McHenry, where Francis Scott Key actually wrote the poem that became The Star-Spangled Banner, while watching the rocket’s red glare and the bombs (literally) bursting in air on September 14, 1814, during the Battle of Baltimore in the War of 1812.
Baltimore is home to the beautiful Inner Harbor, tastefully remodeled to include many restaurants, shops and now expanded to Fells Point, an up-and-coming, boho chic, newly-gentrified waterfront neighborhood.
Baltimore is the home of the beautiful National Aquarium and a Hard Rock Café right in downtown just steps away from the aquarium.
New Jersey
You can visit Thomas Edison’s home in West Orange, NJ. Here you will be able to see Edison’s home and laboratory, and take a step back in time, when machines were run by belts and pulleys and music was played on phonographs. To the uninformed passerby, the buildings betray little evidence of the industries they once started. See where America’s best-known inventor began to change the world with his numerous inventions.
Or, if you are feeling the need to soak up rays on the beach, visit one of America’s most iconic beach resorts. From Linden, NJ, you can drive just about two hours south to get to Atlantic City and the famous Atlantic City boardwalk. This resort beach town has been attracting visitors since the early 1870’s. With a wonderful wide beach and lots of luxury hotels and casinos, Atlantic City still attracts them today. Its famous Boardwalk, initially built in June of 1870, was originally 8 feet wide and 1 mile long; it has been extended now to a width of 60 feet and 5 miles long.
Grab yourself some of the original salt water taffy and watch how it is made – a demonstration machine is on the boardwalk and has probably been there for nearly one hundred years. Other shops cater to all kinds of shoppers (e.g., exotic rugs, jewelry and perfumes) and food establishments ranging from a Nathan’s hot dog stand to many luxurious five-star dining spots in the area.
RV campgrounds can be found right outside of Atlantic City in many nearby areas. Two of the nicest are in Pomona or in Port Republic.

Camping in NJ at Atlantic Blueberry RV Park, located in Port Republic, is the Southern New Jersey fun-filled camping experience. The RV Park is an easy drive to many of the Southern New Jersey and Jersey Shore, Atlantic city area attractions. Atlantic City with its bustling boardwalk and towering resort hotels, Brigantine Beach, a family-oriented beach town and Ocean City, a relaxing ocean town for families with children of all ages, are all convenient getaways from Atlantic Blueberry RV Park.
New York
New York City comprises 5 boroughs sitting where the Hudson River meets the Atlantic Ocean. At its core is Manhattan, a densely populated borough that’s among the world’s major commercial, financial and cultural centers. Its iconic sites include skyscrapers such as the Empire State Building, the Chrysler Building and sprawling Central Park. Broadway theater is staged in neon-lit Times Square.
Of course, when in New York, you can visit the famed Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, but don’t miss the fun in Staten Island too. Staten Island is the southernmost of New York City's 5 boroughs. It is connected to Lower Manhattan via the Staten Island Ferry, which runs across New York Harbor. Staten Island Zoo is home to kangaroos, birds of prey and snakes. The Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden features flower beds, Greek revival buildings and art galleries. Its grounds also include the Staten Island Children’s Museum.
"The Statue of Liberty Enlightening the World" was a gift of friendship from the people of France to the United States and is recognized as a universal symbol of freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It was designated as a National Monument in 1924. Employees of the National Park Service have been caring for the colossal copper statue since 1933. And, Ellis Island may not appear large on a map, but it is an unparalleled destination in United States history. After welcoming more than 12 million immigrants to our shores, Ellis Island is now a poetic symbol of the American Dream.
Take a drive north and east from The City to visit Long Island, to enjoy the beautiful Atlantic beaches along the coast for miles and miles. RV campgrounds on Long Island include Nickerson Beach and Smith Point County Park Campground. If you don’t mind being more inland, you can find Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage as well.
