Adrenaline junkies and outdoors enthusiasts love the thrill of climbing a dune or climbing a trail in a four-wheel drive vehicle. Off-roading fans have been known to spend days taking on the challenge of new off-road locations.

Here are some of the most popular places off-road aficionados congregate that also happen to be terrific places to visit by RV.

ISDRA (California): The Imperial Sand Dunes Recreation Area is the largest dunes area open to off-road vehicles in the US. Stretching for forty miles through far southeastern California to the Mexican border, ISDRA is a must-visit spot for off-roading fans.

Glamis Dunes is one of the most popular ISDRA sections and there are plenty of places to park your RV there. Hundreds of four-wheeling fans come together at Glamis to climb Oldsmobile Hill year-round. There’s even a casual competition there each MLK weekend called the “Four Stroke Wars.”

Dumont Dunes (California): Northeast of Los Angeles, next door to Edwards AFB, you’ll find Dumont Dunes, where thousands of off-highway vehicles are put to the test each year. Plan to camp at “Little Dumont,” a plateau just down the road from the heart of the action. Keep in mind this is “dry camping,” or RV camping without water or other hookups, so when you reserve your RV from nearby El Monte RV Rentals in Victorville, CA, ask them what to do to prepare.

Samoa Dunes Recreation Area (California): Just west of Eureka in northwestern California, you can put your four-wheeler to the test on a challenging Rubicon Course. Samoa Dunes Recreation Area may only have one hundred forty acres, but there are plenty of off-highway thrills to be found there. This off-roading area is adjacent to Eureka Dunes Riding Area, giving dunes climbers another forty acres to play.

Nellis Dunes (Nevada): Located fifteen miles north of Las Vegas, Nevada, Nellis Dunes lets you put your ATVs, dune buggies and four wheel drive vehicles through their paces while staying close to the attractions of Vegas. RV camping is allowed there (without services), but if you prefer more comfortable camping, stay at one of the many RV campgrounds in Las Vegas.

Dunes OHV Area (New Mexico): Off-roaders who prefer mixed terrains to climb will love the Dunes Off-Highway Vehicle Area in the northwest corner of New Mexico. Pick up your RV for the trip, then head for the dunes, rugged hillsides and trails of Dunes OHV Area.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park (Utah): Near Bryce Canyon National Park in southwest Utah, you’ll find Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, home to gorgeous scenery and some tough terrain. The area open to Off-Highway Vehicles (OHV) area is at six thousand feet, so the view of the surrounding countryside is spectacular. Reddish pink sand, large boulders and Ponderosa pines will have you stopping to take pictures between runs up the trails.
